Fellow Members of the King George TEA Party:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  The next monthly KGTP meeting will be Thursday 2 April.

OK, so yes, the KGTP Newsletter is a week and a day late.  I had to go on travel last week and was unable to access my computer.  Not to worry, however, for there is lots of news below to review.

The topic of immediate discussion whenever anyone gets together now is the COVID-19 / coronavirus and the potential for being exposed.  I honestly believe that the most damaging effect has been to our American economy, as evidenced by the stock market’s slide.  What I do appreciate during these conversations, however, is objective perspective and this article is about the only one I have come across to do so:

  • "An example: there were 34,200 deaths in the United States during the 2018–19 influenza season, estimates the CDC. We did not shut down public events and institutions to try to slow the spread of the flu. Yet we have already destroyed $5 trillion in stock market wealth over the last few weeks in the growing coronavirus panic, reports The New York Times, wiping out retirement savings for many."

  • Compared to what?

For those wanting to keep score… here is an authoritative source for some real data on the COVID-19 casualties:

The other hot-button topic is the progress the Virginia candidates have had for the Republican primary for U.S. Senate (to unseat Mark Warner).  As you will recall, we hosted Daniel Gade during our February meeting.  Now that both Gade and Speciale have cleared their first hurdle in getting qualified to run, the primary competition will begin in earnest.

With regards to the Democrats, it is probably a safe bet to say that Mr. Gafftastic himself, Joe Biden, will be their 2020 presidential nominee.  Joe really did Donald Trump a favor this week when he belligerently responded to a pro-gun voter’s question as the reaction from the average citizen watching the exchange will be very damaging to Biden.  Here is a quote from the NRA video made highlighting this exchange and a couple of news articles about it as well:

The trends from the other news stories below can be summarized in a few points:

  • Federal deregulation gives way to commercial capabilities in order to best combat COVID-19
  • Chuck Schumer should get “red flagged” over his threats against SCOTUS
  • Losing gun rights in Connecticut, Illinois, and New Orleans: Totalitarians Gotta Total
  • Warning: Virginia to give illegal aliens driver’s licenses
  • Chinese propaganda and Chinese illegal aliens are on the rise

Regulation

From the top article below:

  • "However, a curiously significant chunk of the fact sheet involved slashing government regulations.  In a section of the document titled 'Empowering Healthcare Providers,' for instance, the White House states '[t]he President’s emergency declaration will give healthcare providers on the front lines of this pandemic the flexibility they need to respond.'  That flexibility comes, mostly, by getting the government out of the way."

  • “'I just think there’s just too much intense hatred that I’ve never seen before or witnessed in my lifetime,' Nola continued. 'I think when push comes to shove, we’re all Americans and we all will stick together when we need to, so why can’t we do it now? We all get one vote and so when we go vote — whoever gets the most wins. It’s just like playing ball or something, you know?'”

From the top article below:

  • "Bazelon’s article ironically shows that originalism has a powerful appeal that no amount of editorializing can squelch. Contrary to Bazelon’s claims, it has been around since the early republic. As James Madison stated: 'I entirely concur in the propriety of resorting to the sense in which the Constitution was accepted and ratified by the nation. In that sense alone it is the legitimate Constitution.' It continues to exert a hold on popular sentiment: That’s the reason that all sides in the Donald Trump impeachment debate, as in the Bill Clinton impeachment debate, appealed to original meaning. Today, this tradition and common sense are reinforced by scholars and judges more than at any time in the last century. We do not yet have a fully originalist legal culture, but the currents are moving in that direction."
